Fest – RESONANCE

The Department organises an inter-collegiate fest – Resonance– every academic year, since 2014. It provides students an avenue to showcase their latent talent in numerous fields. Resonance is a word rich in meaning. It is the quality of possessing a “resonant’ or ‘reverberating tone of voice”. The Humanities fest is named Resonance, symbolising the dynamism of the department and its ability to mould young minds into future torch-bearers who go on to make lasting impact in all their endeavours.

The fest is regarded an integral part of the learning process and witnesses enthusiastic participation from colleges in and around Bengaluru. It brings the youth together to showcase their talents in various aspects of student life: be it art, academics etc. The fest represents a variety of academic and extra-curricular excellence displayed by students. It is a great opportunity to integrate students’ energy, dynamic potential and achievement. Various competitions are organised, some of which include poetry writing, psychodrama, collage making, spell bee, JAM, short film among others. These events offer them a platform to take their first step into a resonant and reverberating future.

Poetry provides the students with a safe way to vent, examine, and understand their feelings. Through raw expression of their thoughts and feelings, poetry also helps them become more attuned to what’s going on in their hearts and minds.

Psychodrama helps the students to improve their relationships and communication skills, enhance their life skills, express their feelings in a safe, supportive environment and experiment with new ways of thinking and behaving.

The students use the opportunity of Collage making as a means of exploring their emotions. It is best used by students to explore, individually or in groups, the meaning of concepts and ideas.

Spell Bee helps in promoting literacy among students by providing them with a positive goal to work towards, and give them a forum to display the fruits of their hard work and knowledge.

In the 2018-19 fest, students of the Department of Humanities had even set a platform for young entrepreneurs to sell their products, providing them a platform to learn leadership and business skills. Over ten food/market stalls were set up that gave a chance for students to turn their dream into a reality. This one-day fest has always been a bar raiser and sets the standard for the fests.

The Department of Humanities has always been, continues to be and will always remain as a department for innovation, education and fun.

Best Practices

Introduction
The Department of Humanities at St. Claret College constantly innovates to offer its students the best learning experience. There are several innovative practices aimed at orienting students to research and enquiry through critical, analytical and interdisciplinary learning. The department ensures a balance of theoretical learning and practical experience which prepares the students to meet the challenges ahead of them.

Our leading best and innovative practices are described below:
Student Conferences
Since the academic year 2012-13 Student Conferences have become a regular annual event of the Department of Humanities. Students of Humanities from various colleges of the state present papers at the conference on a theme determined by the organizing committee. Several students of the Department of Humanities present papers at the event. The best papers are rewarded. The students of the department take care of the organization of the event. The event orients the students towards research, inquiry and critical thinking, in addition to enhancing their organizational skills.

Practical Learning Avenues
The Department supplements classroom learning with hands-on learning experience to students. Journalism students visit print and television media houses for their experiential learning. They are also involved in writing, editing, and publishing in-house news bulletins. Photography and video shooting and editing are strong components of the Journalism programme. Similarly, students of Psychology visit mental health and rehabilitation centers to relate their theoretical learning to real-life situations. Through Humanities Club, students are provided with several opportunities to showcase their talent and bring out student creativity.

Outreach Activities
To realize the mission of SCC of forming socially just men and women who will advance a civilization of love and harmony, the Department of Humanities organizes several outreach programmes. These programmes include our students teaching the lesser privileged students in government schools, visiting orphanages and homes for the elderly, raising funds to provide for inmates in such places. These activities make our students sensitive to the questions of social justice and an equitable society. A recent extension activity organised by the department was a literacy-awareness drive for BBMP workers with an aim to improve their literacy in English and Kannada languages apart from gaining basic insights on Mathematics and Personal hygiene. The initiative received boundless appreciation from various fronts, especially from the recipients of this programme, which made the experience all the more valuable and satisfying.

Departmental Clubs

The Department of Humanities has many in-house clubs. These clubs were introduced to provide extracurricular opportunities to students, and to facilitate practical learning.

Literary Club was established in 2010 to foster literary sensibilities of students and also to provide a platform to develop an interest in matters related to culture, literary arts and language. The activities of this club in the institute also involve the creation of written materials in various forms such as short stories, serial stories, poetry, essays, articles, etc. The club also conducts literary week where several written and spoken literary competitions are conducted. Literary Club is more than just a club for reading and writing; it is also a place where students can come to share their insights on politics, life, and school issues. It is customary that the Literary Club at St. Claret College observes an important day in the life of a major literary figure.

The Humanities Club was formally instituted in the academic year 2014 – 2015 to encourage and provide students with opportunities for growth in their respective fields through competitions, field visits, workshops etc. From the very first year, the club shows a lot of enthusiasm and organizes various events. The club conducted its first national level Inter-collegiate Humanities Fest, “Resonance”, on 12 September, 2014. This fest was opened to both Pre-University and Under-Graduate students of various fields. The club also conducts “Flashback”, a photography competition and exhibition. Humanities club organizes “Food Fiesta” where students are given the opportunity to prepare food and put up food stalls, the proceeds of which goes to charitable purpose.

Young Communicators Club commenced in the year 2017-18 in collaboration with the Public Relation Council of India. The club was started to provide practical experience to the students of Journalism. YCC conducts guest lectures, social awareness programmes, competitions, workshops and visits to centres of learning. It also encourages students in writing columns in the in-house Journal, “Lantern”, on current issues. YCC strives to bridge the gap between the academics, corporate and society that helps the youth become corporate ready and knowledgeable.

Theatre Club was established in the year 2017-18. Theatreis a collaborative form of performing art that uses live performers, typically actors or actresses, to present the experience of a real or imagined event before a live audience in a specific place. Believing that drama is a vital and constructive force in society, the Club provides avenues to students to intimately acquaint themselves with techniques of theatrical events. It is a necessary element in the process of a liberal education, intending to provide a programme for the production and promotion of the college community, the cultural exchange of events with other institutions, the development of experimental workshops, the enrichment of creative talents, the goal of high aesthetic values, the responsibilities of representing the college throughout communities. The club was initiated to build confidence, concentration, communication skills, emotional intelligence and physical development. Theatre club organizes mime, street play and drama, creating social awareness on relevant topics, many a times collaborating with the Government of Karnataka. Theatre plays an active role to mark and celebrate all national festivals by performing events for the same. The entire theatre teams meet up once a week to discuss about the events coming up, team growth and individual growth to improve their performance.
