Department of Languages

The Department of Languages was established in the year 2015 and since then it has grown leaps and bounds, playing a prominent role in the overall development of the College. It is an umbrella department for the varied languages that are taught at St. Claret College. The languages comprise of Kannada, Hindi,Malayalam, Sanskrit and French.

It is true that quite a few students in colleges have lost grip on their native tongue, making it difficult for them in their daily life. With a compulsory language course in the 1st and 2nd year of under-graduate studies, Language Department occupies a central role in bridging this gap. The Department is home to experienced and dedicated faculty who are committed to hone the language skills of the students and make them better equipped for the challenges of tomorrow. With the faculty taking up the role of a guide and a mentor, we ensure that knowledge sharing is not confined within the four walls of a classroom.

Alongside academics, the Department organises a number of programmes and events that work to enrich the intellect of students. Several seminars, conferences, guest lectures, workshops and add-on programmes are initiated by the Department so as to nurture the ward beyond pedantic learning. We take up the mantle of holistic learning and development with pride.

About Department

Our Vision:-

To strive towards the overall enhancement of language skills encompassing Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing (LSRW) and to help the students incorporate a sense of confidence and proficiency in multilingual learning.

Our Mission:-
To understand the need of acceptance and participation in a pluralistically rich and diverse society, with the education imparted from the department and to make the students logically correct, intellectually sound and emotionally sensitive.

Communicate effectively in language and interact in a culturally appropriate manner with native speakers of that language.

Kannada Rajyotsava
The language department organizes Kannada Rajyotsava every year in the month of November. Which the language department celebrates with great enthusiasm. Many cultural programs are presented by the students.

The event is celebrated all over Karnataka state. College students who come to study from other states from Karnataka state also give their participation in this program. This program creates an atmosphere of harmony. Promotes mutual brotherhood. After joining, students from other regions and employees here also consider themselves as a family. With the establishment of the language department since 2014 or the program is held annually with this same enthusiasm.

Hindi Diwas:-
The Hindi unit of the language department organizes this program every year on 14 September. The department of the department remains prompt and endeavoring to make Hindi language the supreme language of the world. All students studying Hindi in college are seen participating in it. May the Hindi language remain alive, what is its purpose and how Hindi connects the country and society? Through this program, the department makes an effort to awaken the students to a sense of Hindi. In addition, cultural and valuable programs are also organized in it.

The Language Department at St. Claret College constantly innovates to provide the best learning experience to its students. So that students continue to learn something and also keep their tendency towards language. The department conducts a variety of competitions, field trips and Student Seminar etc. student upgradation programs under it.

1. Literary Fest:-
The language department has been organizing this program with all the teachers teaching all the languages ​​of the department since last four years 2015. This program enhances the mental and logical development of the students. In this, many types of programs such as story writing, film review, debate, student presentation etc. have to be done. Also, by giving first, second and third prizes, the students develop competitive spirit and skills.

2. Student Seminar:-
The language department started student seminars from session 2019-20. In which the student selects the topic to write on articles and research topics. The language department conducts this program at the departmental level and inter-university. This program gives students the opportunity to make research and learn something new apart from the topics organized.

3. Educational Trip:
The language department has been organizing this trip since 2018. Under which, taking students to a place associated with literary activities, provides them with new information. This trip helps students to learn about the atmosphere and culture of different places in an interesting and fun way. This empowers students with the help of a different approach.

Department Club :-
The Department of Languages has two in-house clubs. These clubs were introduced to provide extracurricular opportunities to students, and to facilitate innovative learning.

Literary Club:- This was established in 2018 to foster literary sensibilities of students and also to provide a platform to develop an interest in matters related to culture, literary arts and language. The activities of this club in the institute also involve the creation of written materials in various forms such as short stories, serial stories, poetry, essays, articles, etc. The club also conducts literary week where several written and spoken literary competitions are conducted. Literary Club is more than just a club for reading and writing; it is also a place where students can come to share their insights on politics, life, and school issues. It is customary that the Literary Club at St. Claret College observes an important day in the life of a major literary figure.

Kannada Academy:- This club was established in 2019. The club gives students a platform to learn and understand the literature, culture and heritage of Karnataka. The club organizes cultural and literary activities inside and outside the college.

Language – Guest Lecture

Guest lectures are an important part of pedagogy adopted by the department. Since the establishment of the department, various guest lectures on related topics are conducted on a regular basis by the concerned subjects of the department. It is held in each session. One for Kannada subject and one for Hindi subject. Eminent and learned persons are invited to deliver these lectures. Due to which Hindi and Kannada Students are benefited.

In this way, four lectures related to their subject are organized every year keeping in mind the interests of the students.

Languages -Conferences

The language department facilitates more lecturers and motivates to make a discovery to contribute to their advancement by learning about the infinite information existing within it. At St. Claret College, the Department of Languages ​​Department regularly organizes a national level seminar and conference every year for Hindi and Kannada languages. There is a wide range of topics for these seminars.

The Department of Languages ​​organized a national level seminar for both Kannada and Hindi languages ​​at St. Claret College on 21 May 2019. The theme of Kannada language was “Dr. Dara Bendre: Life and Literature” and in the Hindi language it was “Chhayavada Memoirs and Punarpath”. Dr. G., the chief guest at the Kannada seminar. Krishnappa was Dr. Shubha Srivastava, a well-known writer at the Hindi seminar and lecturer at Queen’s College, Varanasi. The program was attended by interpreters from several colleges in various states. Total participants in Kannada were 50 members among which 45 members submitted their papers and 38 members participated in Hindi and 32 members successfully submitted papers. The program was successful and knowledgeable. People got a new vision on the subject.

Languages -Value added Programes & Certificate courses

Certificate Course in Spoken Kannada & Hindi Language
The language department plans a spoken certificate course for Kannada and Hindi subjects. In which a 30-hour class is conducted in a session in which weekly classes are planned for the students studying Kannada and Hindi and for any interested student who wants to learn the language. So that he can overcome his linguistic problem of writing, reading and speaking. In addition, A Certificate is also provided by the Department of Languages

Workshops

Going beyond the syllabus, the language department organizes two workshops every year to develop literacy, social awareness, cultural sensitivity, understanding of the processes involved in building cultures as well as critical thinking among students.

On 5 February 2020, a workshop on the subject was organized on behalf of the fourth session of Bangalore University on behalf of the Hindi Department of Language Department. In which the faculty of colleges affiliated to Bangalore University took part. The participants expressed their views on all the points related to the subject, so that every single layer of the subject was openly exposed. It also took care of how to make the subject interesting and student-friendly so that the student could accept it easily. In this program, the members who have added the subject to the syllabus were also invited, which also shed light on why the subject was selected for the students. The students associated with the subject along with the professors also showed their participation and their intent on the subject became clear. In this way, the Department of Languages ​​organizes workshops and faculty development programs to solve the problems of students and students from time to time.
