Vatican Documents on Synodality
“As each part has its own function, so all the parts form one body, and each part belongs to all the others.” - Romans 12:4-5
The Vatican Documents on Synodality present a renewed vision of the Church as a pilgrim people journeying together in faith, hope, and love. Rooted in the Gospel and inspired by the Holy Spirit, synodality calls the Church to listen, discern, accompany, and participate in God’s mission. Drawing from the biblical image of the Body of Christ, the documents emphasise communion, participation, and mission, inviting clergy, religious, and laity to recognise their shared dignity and responsibility. They encourage a Church with “ears to hear”, hearts open to one another, and hands ready to serve, becoming a sign of unity, hope, and missionary discipleship in the world.
A. POPE FRANCIS - DIRECT TEACHING ON SYNODALITY
1. Pope Francis - Address on the 50th Anniversary of the Institution of the Synod of Bishops - 2015
This is one of the most important texts for understanding Francis's original vision of synodality before the 2021–2024 Synod.
It establishes the conceptual trajectory that later became the Synod on Synodality.
2. Episcopalis Communio - 2018
Pope Francis - Apostolic Constitution on the Synod of Bishops
This is the foundational Francis document for understanding how the Synod was transformed from primarily an episcopal meeting into a process of listening, consultation, discernment and reception.
Pope Francis explicitly develops the idea of the Synod as a process rather than merely an event.
3. Pope Francis - Address to the International Theological Commission, 24 November 2022
Pope Francis explicitly connects synodality and theology, arguing that theologians themselves must learn to work synodally through listening, dialogue, discernment and integration of diverse contributions.
4. Pope Francis - Address to Moderators of Lay Associations, Ecclesial Movements and New Communities - 13 June 2024
Pope Francis directly discusses how synodality should become a permanent ecclesial style, involving conversion, participation and the way the Church operates at different levels.
5. Pope Francis - Opening Address, Second Session of the XVI General Assembly - 2 October 2024
This is how synodality was actually practised at the universal level.
Pope Francis describes the synodal process as a learning process through which the Church learns about itself and identifies appropriate pastoral action. He also discusses the participation of lay people, consecrated persons, deacons and priests in the Assembly.
6. Pope Francis - Final Greeting at the Conclusion of the Synod - 26 October 2024
This is the papal interpretation of the completed Synod.
Pope Francis reflects on the three-year journey of listening to the People of God and discerning how to become a synodal Church.

7. Preparatory Document - 2021
Title: For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, Mission
This begins the worldwide consultation and establishes the fundamental questions for listening to the People of God.

8. Vademecum for the Synod on Synodality - 2021
It explains the methodology of the synodal process:

Document for the Continental Stage
This document explains after the worldwide diocesan consultation.

10. Instrumentum Laboris - First Session, 2023
This is the working document for the first universal Assembly.
This document demonstrates how the results of the global consultation were transformed into themes for ecclesial discernment.
The Synod identifies the English and Italian versions as its official versions.
11. Towards the 2024 Assembly
Implementation/continuation document
It explains the work to be undertaken between the First and Second Sessions.
The document includes the work programme, worksheets and roadmap for the continuation of the synodal process.
12. Instrumentum Laboris - Second Session, 2024
This is different from the 2023 Instrumentum Laboris.
It represents the development of the synodal process after the first Assembly.

13. Final Document of the XVI Ordinary General Assembly - 2024
Title: For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, Mission
This is the culminating document of the 2021–2024 Synodal process.
It was approved by Pope Francis on 26 October 2024 and is intended to guide local Churches in implementing coherent pastoral choices and developing a synodal style.
